At least 12 people were killed and
another 12 injured in lightning strikes across different districts of
Bangladesh in a single day. The incidents occurred on Saturday afternoon during
seasonal storms.
The highest number of casualties was
reported in Sunamganj, where five people were killed and at least four others
injured in separate incidents across four upazilas. The victims were struck by
lightning while harvesting paddy in haor areas of Dharmapasha, Tahirpur,
Jamalganj, and Dirai.
In Mymensingh, two people were
killed in Gauripur and Gafargaon upazilas.
Similarly, in Rangpur, two fishermen
were killed by lightning while fishing in a wetland in Mithapukur. At least 10
others were also injured in the same incident.
Elsewhere, one farmer was killed in
Atpara of Netrokona while cutting grass for cattle. Another worker died in
Karimganj of Kishoreganj while harvesting paddy, and a farmer was killed in
Nabiganj of Habiganj while working in a haor.
Local administration and police said
the casualties were caused by sudden lightning strikes during seasonal storms.
The injured are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.
