Malaysia has been finalized as the destination of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s first official foreign visit since assuming office. At the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the Bangladeshi premier is expected to travel to Kuala Lumpur for a two-day state visit on June 21 and 22.

Government sources said that although invitations had been received from several important countries, including India and China, Malaysia was chosen as the destination for the first overseas visit. Diplomatic analysts believe the decision reflects Bangladesh’s commitment to a balanced foreign policy amid evolving regional geopolitics and strategic competition between India and China.

On the second day of the visit, a bilateral meeting is expected to take place between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Discussions are likely to focus on trade, investment, labor market cooperation, education, and broader economic partnerships.

Diplomatic sources noted that despite invitations from both India and China, the government opted to prioritize a neutral and strategically important partner for the inaugural visit. The move is seen as a clear diplomatic signal of Bangladesh’s intention to maintain balance between the two major regional powers.

Experts point out that Malaysia is one of Bangladesh’s most important labor markets and an increasingly significant trading partner. Thousands of Bangladeshi students are currently pursuing higher education there. As a result, the visit is expected to create opportunities for discussions on workforce exports, educational cooperation, industrial investment, and manufacturing-sector development.

Although the full itinerary has not yet been finalized, officials indicate that a formal announcement regarding the visit may be made through diplomatic channels by both countries within the coming week.
