Two Brothers Killed by Lightning Strike in Morelganj

Two brothers were killed after being struck by lightning while working in a paddy field in Morelganj of Bagerhat on Wednesday morning.

The deceased were identified as Bidhan Bachhar, 55, and his younger brother Manik Bachhar, 40, sons of Manoranjan Bachhar of Shaulkahali village under Hoglapasha Union.

The incident occurred at around 11:30 am on Wednesday (September 2) in a paddy field near their home.

According to family members, the two brothers had gone to the field in the morning to work. The weather had remained cloudy and unstable since early morning. At around 11:30 am, a sudden lightning strike hit the area, killing both brothers on the spot.

Their nephew, Rajib Bachhar, said the two uncles had gone to the field together in the morning. After the lightning strike, they were found dead at the scene.

Bidhan Bachhar is survived by his wife and four children, while Manik Bachhar is survived by his wife and two children. Their sudden deaths have plunged both families into deep grief.

Morelganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahidullah confirmed the incident and said police had been sent to the scene.

Lightning occurs when a powerful electrical discharge takes place within or between thunderclouds or between a cloud and the ground. The movement and collision of ice particles and water droplets inside a thunderstorm can cause electrical charges to separate, eventually creating a strong electrical potential that is discharged as lightning.

People working in open fields are particularly vulnerable during thunderstorms. Experts generally advise people to stop outdoor activities and move to a safe enclosed structure as soon as thunderstorms approach. Standing under isolated trees or remaining in open areas during lightning can increase the risk of serious injury or death.

The deaths of the two brothers have once again highlighted the importance of public awareness and timely shelter during thunderstorms, particularly among farmers and people working in open fields.
