Iran’s large oil tanker M/T Kaylo sank in the Gulf of Oman following a US strike. The incident occurred after US forces attacked three Iranian oil tankers, including the Kaylo, on Saturday (September 5).

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the Iranian oil tankers were targeted in retaliation after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked US warships.

On Sunday morning, CENTCOM released a video showing the damaged M/T Kaylo sinking following the attack. The footage shows the heavily damaged tanker gradually disappearing beneath the sea.

In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM claimed that the M/T Kaylo sank in the Gulf of Oman due to the “professionalism and precision” of the US military. The command further claimed that the tanker had joined other Iranian naval vessels lying beneath the sea.

The United States and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran on February 28, triggering a 40-day war between the two sides. Since then, the United States has repeatedly claimed that Iran’s naval forces suffered major losses, with most of the country’s warships either destroyed or sunk.

Following the sinking of the Kaylo, CENTCOM reiterated its earlier claims regarding the damage inflicted on Iran’s naval forces.

Meanwhile, reports have claimed that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked three US warships in retaliation for the American strikes. It was also reported that the IRGC attacked three additional commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz over allegations that they were travelling along unauthorised routes.

The United States confirmed on Saturday that it had attacked three Iranian oil tankers, claiming that the IRGC had previously attacked two of its warships. Washington said the strikes on the Iranian tankers were carried out in response.

However, the United States has yet to comment on the latest Iranian claims of attacks.
