Habiba Clinic Director Denies Allegations of Wrong Treatment in Chitalmari

The director of Habiba Clinic and Barish Diagnostic Centre in Chitalmari, Bagerhat, has denied allegations that negligence and wrong treatment at the facility led to the death of a newborn and caused serious health complications to a patient.

The allegations were described as “false, baseless and part of a deliberate campaign to damage the clinic’s reputation” at a press conference held at the clinic premises at around 12:00 noon on Wednesday (September 9).

Addressing journalists, clinic director Chabbir Ahmed Rupom said he had been running the facility with a reputation for providing healthcare services for a long time. He claimed that the clinic also provides free treatment to poor and underprivileged patients and regularly undertakes various social welfare activities.

Regarding the death of the newborn, Rupom said a woman named Lovely Gharami was admitted to the clinic on July 27 for a caesarean section. According to him, the procedure was performed by an experienced physician and the patient subsequently gave birth to a child with a congenital problem involving the palate.

He said the newborn was unable to feed properly because of the condition and later became critically ill. The baby was subsequently transferred to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Gopalganj for advanced treatment. The child died there after receiving treatment for seven days, he claimed.

Rupom rejected allegations that the newborn’s death was caused by negligence or improper treatment at his clinic.

He also denied allegations that Lovely Gharami’s uterus and urinary tract were damaged because the caesarean operation was performed using the light of a mobile phone during a power outage.

“There are several generators at our clinic. Whenever electricity goes out, generators are used to keep all medical and other activities running,” he said.

Rupom further alleged that a vested group was spreading misinformation and attempting to tarnish the reputation of the clinic by providing journalists with misleading information.

He strongly condemned what he described as a deliberate campaign of misinformation and demanded that the allegations against the clinic be properly investigated.
