Rabies Vaccination Drive for Stray Dogs Begins in Bagerhat

A rabies vaccination campaign for stray dogs has begun in Bagerhat municipality as part of an effort to reduce the risk of rabies and other diseases while promoting humane management of the city’s stray dog population.

The campaign was inaugurated at around 11:00am on Wednesday at the Bagerhat Municipality premises by District Commissioner Golam Md. Baten.

Additional District Commissioner and Municipal Administrator Mezbaha Uddin, Municipal Executive Officer Abdullah Al Masum, vaccination specialist Simon from the Dog Expert Team, and municipal officials and employees were present at the inauguration.

According to the municipal authorities, the initiative was taken in response to the increasing number of dogs in the city and the public health risks associated with dog bites and rabies. Dogs in different parts of the municipal area will be vaccinated in phases.

The municipality has signed an agreement with members of the Dog Expert Team from Feni to implement the vaccination programme. Alongside stray dogs, domestic dogs in the municipal area will also be brought under the vaccination programme gradually.

Municipal officials said vaccinating dogs could significantly reduce the risk of rabies transmission to humans following dog bites. The initiative is also being viewed as a more humane approach to managing stray dogs while protecting public health.

The scale of the challenge is reflected in data from Bagerhat 250-bed District Hospital, where at least 7,500 people received rabies vaccines over the past three months.

The authorities hope that expanding vaccination coverage among dogs will help make the city safer for residents while ensuring more responsible and humane treatment of animals.
