12 ‘Nana Bhai’ Gang Members Surrender in Sundarbans, Arms Handed to Coast Guard

Twelve active members of the notorious ‘Nana Bhai’ gang, including its chief Jahangir Morol alias Rahmat, have surrendered to the Bangladesh Coast Guard in the Sundarbans, handing over a large cache of firearms, ammunition and communication equipment.

The surrender took place at around 6pm on Tuesday (September 8) in the Dhansiddhir Char area of the Sundarbans under Mongla Police Station in Bagerhat. Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the matter at 11am on Thursday (September 10).

According to the Coast Guard, two special operations—‘Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans’ and ‘Operation Mangrove Shield’—are being conducted under its leadership to eliminate active forest gangs and strengthen security in the coastal region.

During the operations, 29 forest outlaws have so far been arrested with a substantial quantity of weapons and ammunition. The Coast Guard has also rescued 42 people who had allegedly been held hostage by the outlaws and handed them over to their families after providing necessary medical assistance.

The Coast Guard said its sustained operations have significantly weakened the activities of several active criminal groups in the Sundarbans. Earlier, a total of 37 active members of different gangs, including the Chhoto Suman gang, three active members of the Boro Jahangir gang and members of the Chhoto Jahangir gang, surrendered with arms and ammunition.

The latest group of 12 surrendered with one eight-shooter, one six-shooter, one four-shooter, one side-hammer, one bolt-action pistol, two M3 gas guns, two 7.65mm pistols, two one-shooters and two air guns.

They also handed over 212 rounds of live cartridges, 29 rounds of blank cartridges, 20 rounds of 7.65mm pistol bullets, five rounds of 8mm live ammunition, 413 rounds of air-gun pellets, four pistol magazines, two air-gun magazines and six walkie-talkies with chargers.

The surrendered members include Jahangir Morol alias Rahmat, 36, Saifullah Morol, 39, Ekhlasur Rahman, 38, Rabiul Islam, 35, Mofizul Islam, 35, Azim Uddin Gazi, 37, and Abdur Rahman Sheikh, 36. They are residents of Paikgachha and Dumuria in Khulna.

Shafiqul Islam, 53, Mintu Gazi, 39, Azizul Gazi, 35, and Shahjahan Mali, 35, are residents of Shyamnagar in Satkhira, while Azizur Rahman, 45, is from Rampal in Bagerhat.

The Coast Guard said the men had allegedly been involved with the Nana Bhai gang for a long period and were engaged in robbery in the Sundarbans as well as holding fishermen and woodcutters hostage for ransom.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said arrangements were being made for the rehabilitation of the surrendered members, while legal proceedings concerning the seized weapons and ammunition were underway.

He urged all remaining active forest outlaws in the Sundarbans to surrender to the Coast Guard and return to normal life. According to him, those who surrender will be given opportunities for rehabilitation through the higher authorities.

However, he warned that anyone continuing criminal activities would face strict legal action under the government’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy.
