A Helpless Family Still Awaits Justice for the Murder of a Father

Details of the Incident : Abdul Kader Palan, son of the late Qayed Ali, was a resident of Kuratoli village under Mirzapur Police Station in Tangail district. His father, Qayed Ali, died 42 years ago, leaving behind six sons and two daughters. As the eldest son, Abdul Kader Palan took responsibility for the family after his father’s death. Over the years, as the number of family members increased, the land left behind by their father was distributed equally among the brothers and sisters.

Between approximately 10:30 pm on 25 April 2023 and 4:00 am on 26 April 2023, Abdul Kader Palan (60), the eldest son of Qayed Ali, was allegedly strangled to death and subsequently hung with a rope from a gab tree in a jungle beside his home. Preliminary evidence reportedly indicated that the death was not a suicide but a planned killing.

Initially, an unnatural death case was filed at Mirzapur Police Station, Case No. 27, dated 26 April 2023. Later, the post-mortem report reportedly stated that Abdul Kader Palan had been strangled after pressure was applied to his testicles and that his body was subsequently hung from the gab tree.

Following this, the case was registered as a GR case at Mirzapur Police Station, Case No. 138, dated 28 June 2023.

The accused named in the case are:

1. Md. Abdul Aziz (48), his paternal uncle;

2. Delera Begum (45), his paternal aunt; and

3. Manik Mia (37), son of the complainant’s elder paternal uncle, Abdul Sower.

According to information obtained during an on-site investigation, the complainant stated that on 25 April 2023, his father had dinner at around 10:00 pm, as usual, and went to bed.

At approximately 3:30 am on 26 April 2023, the complainant’s mother woke up to have Sehri as she was observing a voluntary fast. She went to the room on the northern side of the house to check on her husband and found that Abdul Kader Palan was not there.

After searching for her husband without success, she woke her eldest son, Abu Taleb. At that time, the complainant, accompanied by his uncle Abdul Haque and Md. Arif, began searching for his father.

At approximately 4:00 am, they found Abdul Kader Palan hanging from a rope tied to a gab tree in a jungle to the southeast of their house.

Local residents informed Mirzapur Police Station. At around 8:00 am, police arrived at the scene and, with the assistance of local people, brought the body down from the tree.

The gruesome scene and the heartbreaking cries of the bereaved family deeply saddened the local community. After seeing the lifeless body of the unfortunate father hanging from the tree, local residents demanded that the incident be properly investigated as a suspected planned murder.

The initial inquest and post-mortem report reportedly indicated that Abdul Kader Palan had been strangled after pressure was applied to his testicles. Injuries were also reportedly found on several parts of his body.

The family alleges that attempts were made to portray the incident as a suicide.

The complainant further stated that a dispute between his family and the family of his second paternal uncle, Abdul Aziz, began after his younger brother, Sajib (30), married the daughter of their third paternal uncle, Abdul Haque.

According to the complainant, Abdul Aziz’s family had wanted Sajib to marry his daughter.

Approximately 15 days after Sajib’s marriage, a dispute arose concerning three decimals of land that had been exchanged between Abdul Aziz and his elder brother Abdul Kader Palan approximately nine years earlier. After Sajib did not marry Abdul Aziz’s daughter, Abdul Aziz allegedly demanded that Abdul Kader Palan return the three decimals of land, stating that he no longer accepted the land exchange.

The land dispute subsequently led to serious arguments and tension between the two brothers.

Speaking to local residents, it was learned that Abdul Kader Palan was regarded as an honest, simple and impoverished farmer. Alongside agricultural work, he also worked at brick kilns to earn a living and support his children’s education and his family.

According to local sources, he had no known enmity with anyone in the area and was known for speaking to everyone with a smile.

However, several local residents stated that Abdul Kader Palan had a longstanding dispute with his younger brother, Md. Aziz, over land and property. Local elders reportedly held several meetings and arbitration sessions over the matter, but no lasting resolution was reached.

The victim’s family alleges that the deceased’s paternal uncle may have been involved in the incident due to the longstanding land dispute.

Abu Taleb (33), the complainant, told media representatives in an emotional voice that his uncle had allegedly threatened his father approximately seven months before his death, saying that if the land was not returned, an incident could occur at any time.

The complainant said, “I am a member of a very helpless family. All of us are living in constant fear for our safety. Despite the police case and the investigation by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the accused were mysteriously given relief from liability.”

The bereaved family says that despite repeatedly seeking justice and approaching various authorities, they have yet to receive a satisfactory outcome in the case concerning their father’s death.

On 24 September 2026, the Senior Magistrate’s Court of Tangail reportedly sent the case back to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a fresh and proper investigation.

The family and local community are hopeful that, now that the case has been handed over to the CID, a fresh and impartial investigation will identify those actually responsible, regardless of who they are, and bring them under the law.

The complainant further alleged that attempts were made to suppress the case by using money and the influence of the then government.

In the interest of justice, the impoverished and distressed family is now seeking intervention from the CID and senior police authorities so that the alleged murder of their father can be properly investigated and the actual perpetrators, whoever they may be, can be brought to justice.

The family believes that ensuring a proper investigation and due legal process will help establish justice and restore their faith in the legal system.

The helpless and impoverished family has appealed for the direct intervention of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure justice in the case.
