Environment Minister Joins Homeless Diners for a Meal in Mongla

Princh Mondal Olif, Bagerhat District Correspondent:
Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, joined a weekly meal programme for people in need in Mongla on Friday, October 9. He sat on the ground and ate lunch alongside the homeless and other disadvantaged residents.
The minister visited the local youth-run “One Meal Guest House” after Friday prayers. He spoke with the people attending the meal and sat with them to eat. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sharmin Akter Sumi, the assistant commissioner (land), police officials and other members of the minister’s entourage also joined the diners. Local political leaders, including Mongla Upazila BNP General Secretary Abu Hossain Poni, were present as well.
For the past year, local young people have organized the meal every Friday for poor, vulnerable, homeless and begging residents of Mongla Pourashava and nearby villages. The programme relies on the organizers’ own contributions, support from local businesspeople and friends, and volunteer work.
The minister learned about the initiative after completing scheduled government activities in Mongla and went to the venue. He praised the organizers, saying that many people still struggle to secure enough food. He said providing them with a nutritious meal at least once a week was a commendable effort and encouraged people with means to support similar humanitarian work.
Residents welcomed the minister’s participation, describing his decision to sit and eat with people in need as a gesture of solidarity and social harmony.
