Cancer Screening and Assessment Centre Opens in Rampal

Princh Mondal Olif, Bagerhat District Correspondent:
A cancer screening and assessment centre has been launched for the first time in Jhanjhania, Rampal Upazila, Bagerhat. The centre was inaugurated on Saturday, October 10, by Sheikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, at an event organised by Amader Gram Cancer Care and Research Centre.
The centre aims to bring cancer detection and treatment assessment services closer to people in the remote areas of southern Bangladesh. Until now, many patients had to travel to Dhaka or other major cities for initial tests and treatments such as chemotherapy. These trips increased travel and accommodation costs and placed additional physical and emotional pressure on patients and their families. Local services are expected to reduce the need for such travel.
In coastal areas, limited access to cancer screening has prevented many patients from getting tested at an early stage. As a result, treatment was often delayed, increasing the risk of complications. Regular screening and health assessments at the new centre are expected to help detect cancer earlier and allow patients to seek medical care sooner.
The centre will use electronic medical records to store patient information and monitor treatment progress. Its services will be supported by wireless broadband technology. Trained community health workers will also visit homes to conduct initial screening and raise awareness about cancer. According to the organisers, this will help local patients access advice from specialist doctors.
At the inauguration ceremony, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam pledged to personally cover the treatment costs of 100 underprivileged and homeless cancer patients in the region. Senior officials from the district administration, district council and health department were also present. The organisers also announced plans to transform the centre into a self-reliant and accountable model by 2027.
According to the authorities concerned, the centre will be operated with joint funding from the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Bangladesh Friendship Education Society. In addition to providing medical services, the institution will conduct cancer research and public awareness programmes. The Civil Surgeon and other local health officials welcomed the initiative and assured their support to help maintain the quality and sustainability of its services.
Amader Gram Cancer Care and Research Centre has been conducting breast cancer research in Rampal since 2007. By expanding its work to include a wider range of cancer services, the organisation has taken a new step towards improving access to healthcare at the local level in southern Bangladesh.
If the centre operates successfully, it could strengthen calls for similar services in other remote parts of the country, according to those involved in the initiative.
