Month-Long Water Crisis Hits Residents in Mongla Municipality

Princh Mondal Olif, Bagerhat District Correspondent
Residents of Ward No. 3 under Mongla Port Municipality in Bagerhat district are facing severe hardship as piped water supply has reportedly remained suspended for nearly a month. Despite paying their water bills regularly, residents say they are struggling to secure enough water for drinking, cooking, bathing and other household activities.
According to local residents, the municipal water supply previously met at least part of their daily needs. However, the prolonged disruption has forced families to seek alternative sources. Some residents say even two rounds of water supply a day would not be sufficient to meet household demand.
The crisis has become more difficult for families without private ponds or other reliable sources of water. Residents also claim that water from nearby ponds is unsuitable for regular use. Rainwater, another important source for local households, has become less available due to a lack of recent rainfall.
Residents say they are spending additional time and money collecting water, placing a heavier burden on low-income families. The shortage has also made it difficult to maintain personal hygiene and normal household routines. Some residents have expressed concern about the potential health risks for children and older people if the situation continues.
Locals allege that they have repeatedly informed the relevant municipal offices about the problem, but an effective solution has yet to be provided. They have urged the authorities to restore the pipeline supply as soon as possible.
Residents have also called for an inspection of the water distribution system to identify possible faults and for emergency water supplies to be arranged until normal service resumes.
No official statement was available regarding the cause of the disruption or the measures being taken to address the crisis. The municipality's response should be incorporated into the report once it becomes available.
