Authorities said 2,397 people had been taken into custody on allegations of violence, attacks on law enforcement personnel, damage to public property and disruption of public safety. Seven of the injured security personnel were reported to be in critical condition.
Around 1,500 shops and businesses have been affected by the protests. Alexandre Bompard, president of France’s retail trade federation, said most of the affected businesses had been looted. The financial losses are estimated to amount to several hundred million euros, although no precise figure is yet available.
Addressing the nation on Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned vandalism and looting carried out in the name of protest. He said such violence was unjustifiable and that those responsible would be held accountable.
Macron also said measures would be taken in coordination with local authorities to ensure the security of cities, government buildings and businesses. He pledged support for businesses affected by the unrest.
