After years of waiting, overcoming criticism and working tirelessly, England striker Harry Kane has finally won one of football’s most prestigious individual honours, the Ballon d’Or. By claiming the 2026 award, he has made history as the first English footballer in 25 years to win the prize. Following his remarkable achievement, a new question is being discussed among English football fans: could Kane one day be known as ‘Sir Harry Kane’?

The ceremony, held at the London Palladium Theatre, was an especially emotional occasion for Kane. In 2017, he attended the FIFA Best Awards ceremony at the same venue, alongside some of the biggest names in world football. At the time, however, he was far from the centre of attention. Nine years later, he returned to the same stage to lift the Ballon d’Or trophy.

The 33-year-old striker’s journey has not been an easy one. He played for Arsenal’s youth teams as a child but was later released by the club. Questions about his physique and athletic ability raised doubts about his future in football. Kane, however, overcame that rejection and went on to prove his worth.

Goals Galore at Tottenham, but Trophies Remained Elusive

Kane scored countless goals during his long association with Tottenham Hotspur. Despite setting one record after another, the lack of major team trophies repeatedly exposed him to criticism. His inability to win silverware, despite outstanding individual performances, earned him an unwanted reputation as a player who could not deliver titles.

In 2023, he decided to change that narrative. Leaving England in pursuit of team honours, Kane joined German giants Bayern Munich, beginning a new chapter in his career.

Last season, the striker scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for Bayern Munich and the England national team. Only Lionel Messi has scored more goals in a single season across Europe’s top five leagues.

With his Ballon d’Or triumph, Kane has now answered his critics. He is the first English footballer to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001 and the fifth Englishman overall to claim the honour. Before him, the award had gone to Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen.

Kane Expresses Gratitude After Winning the Award

Kane received the trophy from Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário. Rather than boasting about his historic achievement, the English star expressed gratitude to those who had contributed to his career.

He thanked Tottenham Hotspur, his former coaches, teammates, family and friends. Reflecting on his long journey, Kane said it had once been difficult even for him to imagine that he would reach such heights.

He explained that his career had involved numerous ups and downs, particularly in its early stages. Alongside hard work, maintaining belief in himself had been one of his biggest challenges. Success had taken time, he said, and he had needed to keep pushing forward despite adversity.

The ceremony’s host, French football legend Thierry Henry, praised Kane, describing him as an outstanding combination of talent and hard work.

‘Sir Harry Kane’: Knighthood Speculation Emerges

Kane’s name had been a major talking point even before the Ballon d’Or ceremony. Some people involved in the event reportedly joked that if he won the award, the time might come to address him as ‘Sir Harry Kane’.

In the United Kingdom, the title ‘Sir’ is used before the name of a man who has been awarded a knighthood in recognition of exceptional service or achievement. Winning the Ballon d’Or does not automatically confer the honour, however. Whether Kane receives such recognition in the future will depend on the relevant process and decisions.

Nevertheless, there is little doubt that his achievement holds a special place in the hearts of English football fans.

A Successful Night for Spain, Too

The Ballon d’Or ceremony was not solely about Kane’s triumph. Spanish representatives also enjoyed success across several categories.
