Allegation of Forceful Land Grabbing from Elderly Woman in Chitalmari

An allegation has been raised against a local individual for allegedly attempting to forcibly occupy land owned by an elderly woman in Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat, in violation of the law.
According to the complaint, Mosammat Monowara Begum (71), owner of 1.58 decimals of land under SA Khatian Nos. 66, 67, 81 and DP Khatian No. 75, including part Khatian No. 81/1 under SA Dag Nos. 29, 30, 32 and DP Dag No. 52 in Char Shaildaha Mouza of Hizla Union, has been peacefully possessing the land for a long time. The complaint also states that a court verdict regarding the land is in her favor.
The victim alleged that Md. Mahfuz Sheikh (38) of the same area had been trying to occupy the land forcibly for some time. When she resisted the attempt, she was allegedly threatened on different occasions. Attempts were made locally to resolve the matter, but the accused allegedly ignored those efforts and instead continued to intimidate her.
The complaint further states that on March 27, 2026, at around 8:00 am, the accused, along with several associates, allegedly entered the land forcibly and cut down various planted trees. Upon receiving the information, Monowara Begum rushed to the spot and protested, but she was allegedly abused verbally and threatened with further land grabbing. Several locals reportedly witnessed the incident.
The victim and her family members stated that they appeared at the police station and submitted a written complaint.
When contacted regarding the matter, Officer-in-Charge of Chitalmari Police Station, Md. Nazrul Islam, said that police had been sent to the spot immediately after receiving the complaint. Legal action would be taken after proper investigation, he added.
Fearing insecurity, Monowara Begum filed a written complaint with Chitalmari Police Station and demanded a fair investigation and necessary legal action.
Local conscious citizens have urged the administration to investigate the matter promptly and take appropriate measures.
