Police in
Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat have seized illegal Chinese current fishing nets
worth around Tk 2 million. The nets were later destroyed by fire in front of
local people and administration officials.
The
operation was conducted on Tuesday (April 5, 2026) at around 10:00 am in an
abandoned house near Kunia Bus Stand, based on a tip-off. Police sources said a
group had stored a large quantity of banned current nets there for selling
purposes.
After
receiving the information, the matter was reported to Chitalmari Police Station
Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam by the Borobaria Police Camp in-charge. Acting
on his instructions, a police team quickly reached the spot and recovered the
nets.
The
estimated value of the seized nets is about Tk 2 million.
Later, with
the presence of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khadija Akter and the Upazila Fisheries
Officer, the confiscated nets were publicly burned at an open field near Kunia
Bus Stand.
No arrests
have been made so far and no case has been filed, officials confirmed.
Authorities
said drives against illegal fishing nets will continue to protect fish
resources and the environment.
