A Farm Day 2026 program titled "Increasing Sugarcane Yield and Producing Quality Sugarcane through
the Application of Improved Cultivation Techniques" was held.
On Saturday, June 21, at 11:00
AM, a discussion meeting and sugarcane field visit were organized at Jagirpara (Dumurtala), Halidagachhi,
Charghat, Rajshahi as part of the Farm Day 2026 program.
The chief guest at the event was Abu
Saeed Chand, Member of Parliament for the Rajshahi-6 (Charghat-Bagha)
Constituency constituency. Special guests included Dr. Zebun Nahar Ferdous,
Chief (CPE) of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation Headquarters,
Dhaka, and Rownoshara Arju, General Manager (Seed Inspection) of the same
organization. The meeting was chaired by Md. Humayun Kabir, Managing Director
of Rajshahi Sugar Mills Limited.
In his speech, MP Abu Saeed Chand
said that if the sugar industry is to become profitable, the country's sugar
mills must be modernized. He stated that he had already discussed the matter
with the Ministry of Industries and expressed hope that he would raise in
Parliament ways to make Rajshahi's sugar mills and the sugar industry more
profitable.
Dr. Zebun Nahar Ferdous said that
farmers would benefit from sugarcane cultivation if they followed the
recommendations provided by agricultural experts and took proper care of their
crops. She noted that large quantities of fertilizer are being supplied and
timely advice is being given for controlling harmful pests. Compared to last
year, the sugarcane crop is performing much better this year, and the mills are
expected to operate for a longer period. She further added that sugarcane is
now a profitable crop, as farmers are earning additional income by cultivating
companion crops alongside sugarcane on the same land. She encouraged farmers to
increase sugarcane cultivation to help sustain the sugar industry.
Among others present at the event
were Md. Jamal Hossain, General Manager (Finance); Mostafa Sarwar, General
Manager (Administration); Maksuda Parvin, General Manager (Agriculture); Md.
Abdullah Al Mamun, DGM (Seed and Agro); Partha Pratim Saha, Deputy Manager
(Accounts); and Mohammad Masud Rana, President of the Workers and Employees
Union, along with General Secretary Md. Rafiqul Islam.
All sub-zone heads and sugarcane
farmers from nine sub-zones also attended the program. The event was conducted
by Md. Emdadul Haque, DGM (Extension), and was attended by numerous sugarcane
growers.
