Cristiano Ronaldo answered his critics in style on the pitch. With a brilliant two-goal performance against Uzbekistan, the Portuguese superstar not only helped his team secure a convincing victory but also became Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.
Portugal defeated Uzbekistan 5-0 in Tuesday’s match, with Ronaldo playing a starring role. He opened the scoring in the 6th minute, equaling the World Cup record of Portuguese legend Eusébio with nine goals. He then struck again in the 39th minute to surpass the record and become Portugal’s outright top scorer in World Cup history.
Ronaldo also achieved another remarkable milestone. He became the first footballer in history to score in six consecutive FIFA World Cups, a feat never accomplished by any player before.
Portugal dominated the match from start to finish, controlling possession and creating far more scoring opportunities than their opponents. The European side established a three-goal lead before halftime, with Ronaldo’s brace complemented by a well-executed free-kick goal.
Portugal maintained their attacking momentum after the break. In the 60th minute, an own goal by Uzbekistan defender Nematov further extended the lead. Rafael Leão then added the fifth goal late in the match to seal a comprehensive 5-0 victory.
The match was Portugal’s second fixture in Group K of the World Cup. After drawing 1-1 with Congo in their opening match, the win over Uzbekistan lifted Ronaldo’s side to the top of the group with four points. Colombia sit second with three points, while Uzbekistan remain without a point after two matches.
Portugal will play their final group-stage match against Colombia on June 28. A victory in that encounter would move the European side one step closer to securing a place in the knockout stage.
