An intern
MBBS doctor has begun a hunger strike in front of her husband's residence in
Fakirhat, Bagerhat, demanding recognition as his lawful wife and expressing her
desire to resume their married life.
On Tuesday
(7 July), Dr. Bonya Majumdar, accompanied by her mother, started the protest in
front of the residence of her husband, MBBS physician Dr. Shatadal Mondal, in
Putia village.
Dr. Bonya
alleged that after discovering what she described as an extramarital
relationship between her husband and his sister-in-law, she was subjected to
physical and mental abuse. She further claimed that she was forced to leave the
house while her jewelry and personal belongings were retained.
She said she
is not seeking confrontation but hopes for a peaceful resolution that would
allow her to continue her married life. She also announced that her hunger
strike would continue until her demands are addressed.
Local
residents said they were aware of various allegations circulated against Dr.
Bonya but had not found evidence supporting those claims. Some alleged that
financial hardship on the woman's family may have contributed to the dispute.
When
contacted, Dr. Shatadal Mondal said he was not aware of the protest and added
that a legal notice had already been sent to his wife. He declined to comment
further, citing the advice of his legal counsel because the matter is under
legal process.
Local Union
Parishad member Kalipada Biswas said several community mediation efforts had
been made since the marriage, but none had resulted in a resolution. He added
that the marriage had taken place after due verification and with the consent
of both families.
