Freedom Fighter Md. Shahjahan Sheikh, a resident of
South Shaildah village in Chitalmari Upazila of Bagerhat, passed away due to
old age on Thursday (9 July) at his home. He was laid to rest with full state
honours.
He is survived by his wife, one son, one daughter, and
many relatives and well-wishers. His death has brought deep sorrow to the local
community.
As a mark of respect for his contribution to the
Liberation War, the government arranged a Guard of Honour at his residence at
3:00 pm, despite continuous rain. The ceremony was organized by the Chitalmari
Upazila Administration.
Among those present were Chitalmari Upazila Nirbahi
Officer Khadija Akter, Officer-in-Charge of Chitalmari Police Station Md.
Shahidur Rahman, Upazila Freedom Fighters' Convener Abu Taleb Sheikh, other
government officials, fellow freedom fighters, local public representatives,
and respected community members.
After the Guard of Honour, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer
placed the national flag on the coffin and expressed deep sympathy to the
bereaved family. She also spoke with the family members and conveyed the
government's condolences.
Speakers at the ceremony said that the freedom
fighters are the greatest heroes of the nation. Their sacrifice made Bangladesh
an independent and sovereign country. Giving them a state funeral is a symbol
of the nation's respect and gratitude for their contribution.
The ceremony ended with prayers for the eternal peace
of the late Freedom Fighter Md. Shahjahan Sheikh and for strength and patience
for his grieving family.
