Mother Leaves Two-Year-Old Child by Roadside in Bagerhat, UNO Steps In

Princh Mondal Olif, Bagerhat Correspondent:
A two-year-old child was allegedly left by the roadside by his mother in Morelganj of Bagerhat, prompting local residents and the upazila administration to intervene.
The incident took place on Friday evening in the Jele Para area of Barikhali Union in Morelganj. According to local residents, the child was found crying and alone beside a brick kiln. They rescued the child and initially took him to his grandmother. However, she reportedly declined to take responsibility for the child citing family circumstances.
Later, local people took the child to the residence of Morelganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Habibullah. The UNO immediately arranged for the child's temporary safety, food and clothing.
According to the administration, the child's father, Md Palash, and mother, Mitu Akter, got divorced around three months ago. Following the separation, uncertainty reportedly arose over who would take responsibility for the child.
The UNO subsequently contacted the child's father, who is currently staying outside the area due to work. He has reportedly agreed to appear before the administration on Monday and take responsibility for his child.
In the meantime, the child has been placed temporarily under the care of his paternal aunt, Reshma Khatun. The administration has also provided financial assistance for the child's food and other basic needs for three days.
The administration said a hearing will be held on Monday to determine the child's legal guardianship and future safety. Authorities are also examining whether legal action can be taken over the alleged abandonment of the child.
Officials said the primary objective is to ensure the child's safety and determine a stable arrangement for his future care.
