Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it seized a US submarine drone in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC Navy made the claim in a statement on Sunday (September 27).

The IRGC said the drone was seized during a coordinated operation involving intelligence surveillance and electronic warfare capabilities. According to the force, the drone had been used for surveillance and intelligence-gathering missions.

Iranian forces identified the seized drone as a Remus 600, an autonomous underwater vehicle (UUV). The drone is currently in the custody of IRGC specialists, who are working to extract and analyse its data, according to the statement.

Earlier this month, the IRGC also claimed to have seized another US underwater drone near the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for international energy trade. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), an average of around 20 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products passed through the waterway each day in 2025, accounting for roughly 25% of global seaborne oil trade.

Shipping through the Strait has been significantly disrupted since the Iran-US conflict began in late February. A recent Reuters report said that before the conflict, an average of around 125 large commercial vessels passed through the waterway each day, but the number fell significantly in September.

However, no separate confirmation from the US military regarding Iran’s claim that it seized the drone was available in the report.
