Argentina advanced to the FIFA World Cup semi-finals with a 3–1 extra-time victory over Switzerland, thanks to goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez. Lionel Scaloni's side will now face England in the last four.
Playing in Kansas City, the reigning
world champions took an early lead in the 10th minute. Alexis Mac Allister
headed home from a Lionel Messi corner to put Argentina in front.
Despite leading at halftime, Argentina were
pegged back in the second half. In the 67th minute, Dan Ndoye
burst into the box from the left and beat goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez
with a low finish to level the score at 1–1.
Switzerland suffered a major setback in the 72nd minute.
Referee initially booked Leandro Paredes, but after a VAR
review, the decision was overturned. Breel Embolo was instead shown a
second yellow card for simulation and sent off, reducing Switzerland to ten
men. Even with a numerical disadvantage, the Swiss held on to force extra time.
The deadlock remained intact for much of the
additional period before Julián Álvarez produced a moment of brilliance in the 112th minute.
His superb curling strike from around 25 yards gave Argentina a 2–1 lead.
In the first minute of stoppage time in
extra time, Lautaro
Martínez capitalized on a rebound to score Argentina's third
goal, sealing a 3–1 victory and confirming their place in the
semi-finals.
Lionel Messi also had
opportunities to score. In the 85th minute, he was denied in a
one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. Although the assistant referee raised
the offside flag, television replays later showed that Messi had been onside.
With the victory, Argentina secured a place in the World Cup semi-finals, where they will face England in Atlanta on Wednesday at 1:00 a.m. Bangladesh time.
