Measles and Suspected Measles Deaths Surpass 1,100 in Bangladesh

The number of deaths from measles and suspected measles has surpassed 1,100 in Bangladesh. Five more people died with suspected measles symptoms in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths this year to 101 from confirmed measles and 1,003 from suspected measles symptoms.

The combined death toll now stands at 1,104.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the figures in its regular health bulletin on Tuesday (September 29).

According to the DGHS, three people died with suspected measles symptoms in Dhaka division during the 24-hour period from 8am Monday. Meanwhile, 1,339 new patients with measles or suspected measles symptoms were admitted to hospitals across the country during the same period.

Of the new admissions, 516 were reported in Dhaka division, 279 in Chattogram, 206 in Sylhet, 107 in Barishal, 89 in Khulna, 86 in Mymensingh, 29 in Rajshahi and 27 in Rangpur.

According to DGHS data, a total of 168,655 patients with suspected measles symptoms have been admitted to hospitals across the country since March 15 this year. Of them, 161,798 have been discharged after receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, the number of suspected measles cases reported during the same period has reached 190,550. Measles has been confirmed in 21,392 of those cases.

The figures were compiled based on the DGHS’s regular surveillance and hospital-based reporting system.
