Lionel Messi bid farewell to the Argentina national team after their match against Benin, delivering an emotional speech after the game in which he thanked his teammates, supporters and the people of Argentina.

Reflecting on more than two decades wearing the national team jersey, Messi said representing Argentina had been the greatest honour of his career. He said he had always given his best for the team and the jersey, even during difficult periods.

Messi said the thought of never returning to the national team was painful for him, but he believed this was the right time to say goodbye. He also thanked his teammates, saying that playing alongside them had allowed him to fulfil his childhood dreams of winning the World Cup, Copa America and Finalissima.

The Argentine star also recalled playing for the national team in different parts of the country. Wherever they played, he said, the love and support of the fans made the team feel as though they were playing at home.

Messi described returning to Argentina after winning the World Cup and playing at the same venue as one of the happiest moments of his career. He said he still becomes emotional whenever he watches videos from that day.

As he prepared to leave international football, Messi said he would deeply miss the feeling of stepping onto the pitch wearing the Argentina jersey. However, he expressed his intention to support the next generation of Argentine players from the stands in the future.

Messi also stressed the importance of unity within the team. According to him, difficult times reveal the strength of a team’s foundation and bonds. He said Argentina had achieved major success because of its strong team spirit and unity.

Overcome with emotion toward the end of his speech, Messi said, “I don’t want to leave. I don’t want to leave this field.”

He then expressed his love and gratitude to the supporters, saying that being Argentine was a source of immense pride for him.
