The Bangladesh Coast Guard has rescued four fishermen held hostage by the notorious Samrat gang in the Sundarbans, following a special operation in the Shipsha River area of Dacope upazila in Khulna. The fishermen were rescued unharmed on October 11, but no gang members were arrested as they fled into the dense forest after sensing the presence of the Coast Guard.

According to information received, a team from the Coast Guard's Nalian outpost under the West Zone conducted the operation around noon on October 11 near the Arbania Canal, adjacent to the Shipsha River. Acting on a tip-off, the team launched the operation to rescue the fishermen reportedly being held at the hideout of the Samrat gang.

The rescued fishermen were identified as Moinur, Badsha Gazi, Sujon Hossain and Imam ul Mallik. All four are residents of Paikgachha upazila in Khulna district. They reportedly fell into the hands of the outlaws on October 10 while fishing and collecting crabs in the Sundarbans.

According to the fishermen's preliminary statements, the gang abducted them and held them hostage to demand ransom. They also alleged that they were subjected to physical and psychological abuse while in captivity.

The Sundarbans provides a vital source of livelihood for thousands of coastal residents who depend on fishing and crab collection. However, incidents of abduction and ransom demands by forest outlaws have become a serious source of concern for those working in the forest's rivers and canals.

The rescued fishermen reportedly said that the outlaws frequently change their hideouts and use remote canals and dense forest areas to avoid detection. Such difficult terrain creates significant challenges for law enforcement agencies seeking to locate and apprehend the suspects.

The gang members managed to escape into the deeper forest after detecting the Coast Guard team's presence. As a result, no suspect could be detained during the operation. The legal process for handing over the rescued fishermen to their families was reportedly underway.

Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the force was conducting two special operations to make the Sundarbans free from forest outlaws: Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans and Operation Mangrove Shield. He added that intelligence surveillance had been intensified to identify members of the Samrat gang and bring them to justice.

The rescue has brought relief to the four fishermen and their families, but concerns remain over the safety of people who depend on the Sundarbans for their livelihoods. Regular patrols, effective intelligence gathering and coordinated action by law enforcement agencies are essential to prevent abductions and ransom-related crimes.

Ensuring security in the Sundarbans is important not only for protecting the forest but also for safeguarding the lives, livelihoods and economic activities of coastal communities that depend on its natural resources.
