Students of Dhaka Central University have temporarily suspended their ongoing protest demanding the issuance of the university ordinance to safeguard their future.

Abdullah Fahad, a student of Dhaka College (2022–23 session), said, “Our sit-in at the academic building was ongoing. Although we held discussions with the Education Adviser, we were preparing to continue the protest. However, the authorities informed us that rushing the ordinance could create complications, which might be detrimental to students in the long run. Considering this, we decided to temporarily suspend the protest.”

Fahad also mentioned that a final decision on the ordinance will be made at an inter-ministerial meeting on December 25. However, the Education Adviser could not provide a specific timeline for its issuance. “We want to make it clear that the ordinance must be issued promptly after the meeting,” he added.

Warning about future actions, Fahad said, “Our draft clearly states that if Dhaka Central University’s operations extend into the 2025–26 academic year, we will be compelled to launch a strict movement. This could even lead to a complete shutdown of Dhaka city. We urge the government to issue the ordinance quickly to ensure students’ identities are secured.”
