Police in Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat have seized illegal Chinese current fishing nets worth around Tk 2 million. The nets were later destroyed by fire in front of local people and administration officials.

The operation was conducted on Tuesday (April 5, 2026) at around 10:00 am in an abandoned house near Kunia Bus Stand, based on a tip-off. Police sources said a group had stored a large quantity of banned current nets there for selling purposes.

After receiving the information, the matter was reported to Chitalmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam by the Borobaria Police Camp in-charge. Acting on his instructions, a police team quickly reached the spot and recovered the nets.

The estimated value of the seized nets is about Tk 2 million.

Later, with the presence of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khadija Akter and the Upazila Fisheries Officer, the confiscated nets were publicly burned at an open field near Kunia Bus Stand.

No arrests have been made so far and no case has been filed, officials confirmed.

Authorities said drives against illegal fishing nets will continue to protect fish resources and the environment.
