The Bangladesh Nationalist Party
(BNP) has decided to bring its ministers and members of parliament under
greater accountability to grassroots party leaders through regular review
meetings. The decision came during a special discussion meeting held at the Krishibid
Institution Bangladesh in the capital.
Addressing party leaders at the
closed-door meeting on Saturday, Prime Minister and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique
Rahman said stronger coordination with both the party and the public is
essential for the success of the government.
Leaders from the BNP, as well as its
affiliated bodies including Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Jatiyatabadi
Chhatra Dal, attended the meeting from both central and district levels.
Party officials announced that
similar meetings would now be held every three months to review government
performance, development plans, and organizational weaknesses.
Ministers and MPs were instructed to
maintain regular communication with local leaders and activists. They were also
told to increase publicity regarding government development activities and the
implementation of the party’s election manifesto. Grassroots leaders were
encouraged to formulate programs based on public opinion and report them to the
central leadership.
Participants described the meeting
as resembling a “mini parliament,” where ministers presented updates on their
ministries and district-level leaders directly raised questions and
suggestions. Party insiders viewed the process of ministers explaining
government activities before party leaders as a positive step toward
accountability.
