Cybersecurity researchers have warned that some Android apps could put users’ personal and financial information at risk. Apps presented as GPS tools, wallpapers, photo editors and keyboards have allegedly been used to distribute malware. Users have been advised to check their devices and remove such apps if necessary.

The findings were reported by cybersecurity firm Bitdefender. Researchers said the suspicious apps had already been downloaded a large number of times. Some reportedly change their names or icons after installation, making them difficult for users to identify.

According to the researchers, malicious apps can sometimes exploit advertising frameworks to facilitate the delivery of malware to devices. This could put not only personal information but also banking and other financial data at risk.

Experts recommend checking the developer’s identity, user reviews, ratings and download figures before installing an app. Users should also avoid downloading software from unfamiliar websites, suspicious links or untrusted app stores.

Keeping the phone’s operating system and apps updated and avoiding unnecessary permissions are also recommended. Users should be cautious if a seemingly ordinary app requests unnecessary access to SMS messages, phone calls, contacts or personal files.

If a suspicious app is found on a device, users should consider uninstalling it and reviewing the security of important accounts. Anyone who believes their banking or financial information may have been compromised should contact the relevant bank or financial institution immediately.

However, experts caution that the mere presence of an app on such a list does not necessarily mean that every version or installation is currently malicious. Users should verify the specific app version, developer and latest security information before taking action.
