Dhaka, Aug. 8: A BNP leader was shot and injured by unidentified assailants in the capital’s Pallabi area on Friday afternoon. A woman was also injured in the incident.

The injured man, identified as Md. Alamgir, is a member of the BNP’s Nawabganj thana unit in Dhaka. He is involved in the fish business and lives with his family in Mirpur-11, Pallabi.

According to relatives, Alamgir left his home at around 5:30pm and went to a tea stall in Block B of Road No. 2. Several people arrived in a private car and opened fire at him before fleeing the scene.

Alamgir sustained gunshot injuries to the right side of his head, abdomen and right buttock. Relatives initially took him to a local Islami Bank Hospital before transferring him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 6:50pm for advanced treatment.

Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital said Alamgir requires urgent surgery.

A police source said preliminary information suggests that local activists associated with the Awami League’s youth wing may have been involved in the attack. Two suspects, identified as Rubel and Bappa, have been named in connection with the incident, and police are working to bring them to justice.

The injured woman was identified as Jochhona Begum. Details about the nature of her injuries were not immediately available.

The motive behind the attack on Alamgir remains unclear. The officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station could not immediately be reached for comment.
