Police have detained a woman for questioning following the mysterious death of a seven-year-old boy in Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat district.

The deceased, Abu Talha, was the son of Saikat Sheikh from the Town-Nowapara area. The incident took place on Saturday (23 May) in the Lakhpur area of the upazila.

According to local residents and family sources, Abu Talha had been living with his grandfather after his parents separated nearly a year ago. A few days earlier, he went to visit his father and stepmother at their rented house in Lakhpur.

On Saturday morning, family members found the child inside a water-filled bucket in an unconscious condition. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Following the incident, members of Bangladesh Police, including senior officials from Bagerhat District Police, visited the scene. The body was later recovered and sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

The child’s family alleged that the death was not accidental and suspected foul play. Meanwhile, the stepmother told police that she was outside the house at the time and discovered the child after returning home.

Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar said the death appeared unusual and an investigation is underway. He added that further legal action would be taken after receiving the autopsy report and completing the investigation.
