Eight fishermen have been rescued alive after their fishing boat became stranded in the deep sea following an engine failure and remained adrift for nearly five days. The rescue operation was carried out by the Bangladesh Coast Guard in the sea area about 11 nautical miles south of Kokilmoni in the Sundarbans.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, media officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, confirmed the incident on Friday morning.
According to Coast Guard sources, the fishing boat carrying eight fishermen left the Kokilmoni area at around 11:00am on September 19 for fishing in the deep sea. At one point, the boat's engine developed a technical problem and stopped working, leaving the vessel drifting in the sea.
The fishermen were initially unable to contact the boat owner because the vessel was outside mobile network coverage. After several days, the boat entered an area with mobile connectivity at around 3:00pm on September 24. One of the fishermen then managed to contact the boat owner by phone and informed him about their situation.
The owner subsequently contacted the Coast Guard's Western Zone and requested assistance. Following the information, Coast Guard Station Kokilmoni launched a rescue operation to locate the stranded fishing boat.
During the operation, Coast Guard personnel located the disabled boat in the deep sea and rescued all eight fishermen alive. After being brought to safety, the fishermen were provided with initial medical assistance and necessary food supplies.
The rescued fishermen and the fishing boat are currently in the process of being handed over to the owner, according to the Coast Guard.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the Coast Guard would continue to conduct rescue operations whenever fishermen face emergencies at sea and require assistance.
