Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the government is formulating a separate legal framework to prevent crimes such as enforced disappearances.

In a message issued on the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, he said the government has begun investigating every case of disappearance and initiating legal proceedings. To prevent such crimes in the future, the government has introduced the “Prevention and Remedies for Enforced Disappearance Bill, 2026” and the “National Human Rights Commission Bill, 2026” in the National Parliament.

The prime minister said an enforced disappearance is not merely the disappearance of an individual; it also affects the dreams, hopes and future of an entire family. He called for international unity and solidarity to ensure justice and accountability for individuals and institutions involved in such crimes.

Tarique Rahman further said that although some people who were victims of enforced disappearance in the past have returned, many others, including Ilias Ali and Chowdhury Alam, are still missing.

Describing enforced disappearance as a grave violation of human rights, the prime minister expressed hope that the new laws, once enacted, would establish a strong legal framework to prevent such crimes in the future.
