Jaynal Sardar, 55, described as a close associate of notorious Khulna criminal Ershad Shikder and a fugitive convicted in a sensational murder case, has been arrested by elite force SRB after allegedly remaining in hiding for 27 years.

He was arrested from the Sonadanga area of Khulna city during a joint operation conducted by SRB personnel.

A joint team from the headquarters companies of SRB-6 and SRB-8 conducted the operation at around 10:50pm on Saturday (September 26) in the Sonadanga Model Police Station area based on intelligence and information gathered through technology, according to SRB sources.

Jaynal Sardar is the son of late Ahmmed Ali Sardar of Bongkura village under Gournadi Police Station in Barishal district.

According to SRB, the allegations against Sardar were proven beyond reasonable doubt in a murder case filed with Rupsa Police Station in Khulna district in 1999.

Following the trial, a court sentenced him to life imprisonment with hard labour and fined him Tk 10,000, with an additional one year of simple imprisonment in default of payment.

The court also sentenced him separately to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk 5,000 for concealing the victim’s body after the murder, with an additional six months of simple imprisonment in default of payment.

Following the court’s verdict, Sardar allegedly evaded law enforcement and remained in hiding for 27 years using disguises.

SRB said the arrested convict has been handed over to Sonadanga Model Police Station in Khulna city for further legal action.
