The Special Riverine Battalion (SRB-6) has arrested two men, including the prime accused and alleged mastermind, Miraj alias Speaker Miraj, in a case over the serious machete attack on police inspector Shah Alam in Khulna. His alleged accomplice, Ibrahim, was also arrested.
According to SRB-6, a special team conducted separate raids on Thursday, October 15, following a tip-off. The operations took place in the Kalabagan area under Sonadanga Police Station and the Tutpara area under Khulna Sadar Police Station.
The arrested men were identified as Miraj, 39, also known as Speaker Miraj, and Md. Ibrahim Gazi, 42. Both are residents of Khulna.
According to the case statement, Shah Alam, 43, an inspector working at the Khulna district circle office, was travelling by rickshaw to the Police Club on October 9 when three unidentified muggers intercepted him in front of Collegiate School in Khulna city. They allegedly snatched his money and mobile phone before striking both his wrists with a sharp machete, leaving him seriously injured.
He was rescued with assistance from the officer-in-charge of Khulna Police Station and a mobile team from Sonadanga Police Station. He was initially taken to City Medical College Hospital and later admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
As the condition of his hands was considered serious, doctors in the surgery department referred him to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment. He is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to the report.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Md. Awal Hossain of the District Detective Branch filed a case against unidentified suspects at Khulna Sadar Police Station.
An analysis of Miraj’s police records reportedly found several cases against him involving serious injury, theft and robbery under the Aranghata and Sadar police stations of Khulna Metropolitan Police. Ibrahim Gazi also has a case under the Narcotics Control Act at Khulna Sadar Police Station, according to the report.
During preliminary interrogation, both suspects reportedly admitted to direct involvement in the incident. SRB-6 said the two arrested men would be handed over to Khulna Sadar Police Station for further legal proceedings.
