The janaza (funeral prayer) of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been completed amid a massive outpouring of people. The prayer began at 3:03 pm on Wednesday at Manik Mia Avenue and concluded at 3:05 pm, with thousands gathering to pay their final respects.
The janaza was led by Mufti Mohammad Abdul Malek, Khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
Earlier, Khaleda Zia’s son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman arrived at the janaza venue and requested prayers for his mother. Addressing the gathering, he said, “Please pray so that Almighty Allah grants her Jannat.”
By 3:00 pm, areas surrounding Manik Mia Avenue—including Bijoy Sarani, Khamarbari, Karwan Bazar, Farmgate, Shahbagh, and Mohammadpur—were crowded with mourners.
At 2:59 pm, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan addressed the gathering as Khaleda Zia’s body was brought to the venue.
At 2:33 pm, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus arrived to attend the janaza. The prayer was held across the inner grounds of the National Parliament complex, its outer areas, and the entire stretch of Manik Mia Avenue.
Standing for the janaza were Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, and National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam (from right). One person to the left of the Chief Adviser stood Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.
