Amid ongoing
political tensions in Nepal, former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been
arrested by police. He was detained early morning from his residence in
Kathmandu. Former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak was also taken into custody.
The arrests
came just a day after newly appointed Prime Minister Balen Shah and his cabinet
were sworn in, adding a new dimension to the country’s evolving political
landscape.
According to
reports, an investigative panel formed to probe last year’s violent crackdown
on anti-government protests recommended criminal negligence charges against the
two . Acting on this recommendation, law
enforcement authorities carried out the arrests.
A
spokesperson for Kathmandu Valley Police stated that the for their alleged involvement in the
suppression of youth-led anti-corruption protests. However, formal charges have
not yet been filed.
Oli had
previously rejected the findings of the investigation, calling them politically
motivated and an attempt to damage his reputation.
Meanwhile,
the new Home Minister Sudan Gurung stated, “No one is above the law. This
action is not an act of revenge but a step toward justice.”
It is worth
noting that Oli’s government collapsed following mass protests last year. A
subsequent interim administration oversaw elections, which were won by a new force led largely by the younger
generation, reflecting widespread public frustration over economic stagnation
and governance issues.
