Students of the proposed Dhaka Central University (DCU)—formed by incorporating seven government colleges in the capital—staged a sit-in and blockade on Sunday, demanding the completion of admission formalities for the 2024–25 academic session and the immediate commencement of classes.

Starting at 1:30 PM, students surrounded the office of DCU’s interim administrator as well as the administrative building of Dhaka College, enforcing a blockade that continued through the afternoon.

Protesters chanted slogans such as: “No more delays in education,” “Stop stalling the admission process,” “Education, not syndicates,” and “Set fire to the syndicate throne.”

Fuad, a student of the 2024–25 session, said,
“We took the admission test under DCU and passed. Since then, we have been given multiple dates to submit our admission documents, but the administration is not accepting them. Other universities have already completed their first semester and are entering the second, yet nothing is progressing for us. That is why we gathered here—to demand that our documents be received and our classes begin.”

He added, “Many students came with their parents today to finalize their admission, but the administration refused to take the papers. Students and guardians are deeply frustrated, which led to today’s sit-in and blockade.”

Shanta, a newly admitted student of Eden College under DCU, said, “Today was supposed to be the submission day. When we went to Eden College, they directed us to Dhaka College. But here too, they refused to accept our documents. We are being harassed. We call upon the teachers and the government to stop playing with our future.”
