Police have arrested Rubel Hossain (35), a fugitive convict sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case in Kalai upazila of Joypurhat district.

He was arrested on Tuesday morning (23 December) from the Matidali area of Bogura city with the assistance of information technology and in cooperation with Bogura Sadar Police Station.

Rubel Hossain is the son of Afsar Ali of Madai village under Punot Union of Kalai upazila. The information was confirmed by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalai Police Station, Md. Rafikul Islam.

According to OC Md. Rafikul Islam, a rape case was filed at Kalai Police Station on 1 August 2018. After completing the investigation, the then investigating officer submitted a charge sheet to the court. Following a prolonged hearing, on 11 November 2024, the Sessions Judge’s Court sentenced Rubel Hossain to life imprisonment in absentia and also imposed a fine of Tk 50,000.

Since then, police had been searching for him. On Tuesday morning, acting on information obtained through technology, Kalai Police, with support from Bogura Sadar Police, arrested Rubel Hossain from the Matidali area. He was later produced before the court and sent to jail in the afternoon.
