Sharmin Chaudhury, has been detained by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s
Detective Branch (DB).
She was picked up early morning from a
residence in Dhanmondi, in the capital Dhaka.
Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said
she has been taken to the DB office and is currently being held there. Later,
Joint Commissioner Nasirul Islam confirmed that she was arrested from a
relative’s house. He added that against her are being reviewed and she will be
produced before a court following necessary legal procedures.
It is mentionable that she stepped down from the Speaker’s position after the political
change in 2024. She had earlier assumed office on April 30, 2013, and served in
the role for a long period.
She has been named in cases related to
violence surrounding the July mass uprising. Among them is a murder case filed
in Rangpur over the shooting death of a gold worker. The case was filed by the
victim’s spouse and includes several former ministers as accused.
