The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA)
has launched a major initiative to address the longstanding waterlogging
problem affecting the runway and surrounding areas of Shah Amanat
International Airport. The authority has begun re-excavation of Canal
No. 12 using its own funds and resources to improve drainage and
ensure the rapid removal of rainwater.
According to officials, heavy rainfall during
the monsoon season frequently causes water to accumulate on the airport runway
and nearby areas, raising concerns about potential disruptions to flight operations
and overall airport activities. The re-excavation project is expected to
significantly reduce these risks.
The CPA said the primary objective is to
restore the canal's natural flow and enhance the area's drainage system. Once
completed, the project is expected to substantially reduce runway waterlogging,
making airport operations safer and more efficient.
The initiative is also being implemented as
part of the port authority's support for the Chattogram City
Corporation (CCC) in improving the city's drainage network. Officials
believe the project will contribute to a more effective urban water management
system.
Senior CPA officials are supervising the
excavation work on-site, closely monitoring its progress and providing
necessary instructions to ensure timely completion.
Authorities hope that once the re-excavation is completed, it will provide a long-term solution to waterlogging in the airport area and surrounding neighborhoods, allowing normal operations to continue even during the monsoon season.
