A huge pile of garbage has been lying beside the main road in the Mukhar Banda area of Char Fasson upazila in Bhola for a long time, causing growing environmental pollution and posing serious risks to public health.

Local residents alleged that no effective initiative has yet been taken by the authorities concerned to address the problem.

Residents said garbage is brought from different areas and dumped at the site every day. As a result, the pile continues to grow, while the stench has made the surrounding environment increasingly unbearable. Pedestrians and vehicle drivers using the road are also facing considerable difficulties.

According to locals, the accumulated waste has increased the presence of mosquitoes and flies, raising concerns about the spread of various diseases, including dengue and diarrhoea. Children and elderly people are particularly vulnerable to the health risks, they said.

Several concerned residents said, “This is a busy road. Dumping garbage here in this manner is completely inappropriate. If immediate action is not taken, the situation will become even worse.”

Residents have urged the local administration to remove the accumulated waste as soon as possible and take steps for a permanent solution. They have also called for the introduction of a proper waste management system in the area.

Meanwhile, Char Fasson Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Rumana Afroze said the garbage dump at Mukhar Banda had existed for a long time and was not created recently.

“We are trying to resolve the issue. We have already sent a letter to the ministry seeking approval for land acquisition, and we are waiting to receive the approval soon,” she said.

She added that the administration would try to clean the accumulated garbage by applying bleaching powder.

“We hope there will be a solution to the problem very soon, InshaAllah,” the UNO said.
