Although the first unit of the Rooppur
Nuclear Power Plant is scheduled to begin supplying electricity to
Bangladesh's national grid on a trial basis in August, several
key agreements remain unresolved.
Among the outstanding issues are the final
agreement on the management of spent nuclear fuel, the
determination of electricity tariffs, and arrangements related to the plant's
operation and maintenance. Experts have cautioned that proceeding with power
generation without ensuring transparency and long-term safety on these matters
could pose significant risks.
Project authorities, however, maintain that
commercial operation cannot begin without approval from the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and insist that all necessary preparations
are progressing according to schedule.
Concerns also remain over the capacity of the
national power grid, the repayment of Russian project loans, and the long-term
financial implications of the country's first nuclear power plant.
