The Bangladesh Coast Guard has recovered a number of firearms and rounds of ammunition during a special operation in the Sundarbans in Bagerhat's Mongla area. However, no member of the suspected robber gang could be arrested as they fled into the deep forest after noticing the presence of the Coast Guard.
Coast Guard officer Lieutenant Commander Shawkat Ahmed confirmed the matter on Thursday morning, October 8.
He said two special operations, titled “Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans” and “Operation Mangrove Shield,” are being conducted under the leadership of the Bangladesh Coast Guard to eliminate active forest robber gangs and ensure security in the coastal areas.
Based on confidential information, the Coast Guard learned that a gang was staying near the Forest Office area of the Shela River in the Sundarbans with plans to carry out a robbery. Acting on the information, a special team from Coast Guard Base Mongla conducted a raid in the area at around 8:00 pm on October 7.
Sensing the presence of the Coast Guard, the gang members fled into the deep forest. As a result, none of them could be arrested or identified.
Later, a search of the area led to the recovery of six single-barrel guns, three air guns, one pipe-gun trigger and 14 rounds of live ammunition, which had been concealed in a clever manner.
Lieutenant Commander Shawkat Ahmed said the process of taking further legal action regarding the recovered arms and ammunition is underway.
