Morocco booked their place in the Round of 16
after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a
1-1 draw after regulation and extra time in a thrilling FIFA World Cup knockout
match.
Like the Germany–Paraguay encounter in Boston,
the match was decided on penalties. However, this shootout proved even more
dramatic as both teams struggled from the spot. The Netherlands missed three
penalties, while Morocco failed to convert two. Despite the missed
opportunities, the African side held their nerve to secure victory.
Morocco enjoyed more possession and created
the better chances in the opening stages of the match. They launched several
attacks in the first half but failed to capitalize due to poor finishing in
front of goal.
The Netherlands eventually broke the deadlock
in the 72nd minute. Cody Gakpo fired home a powerful shot from inside the box
after receiving a pass from Crysencio Summerville. The Dutch forward was
visibly emotional after scoring, as he celebrated amid personal grief, with
teammates rushing to embrace him.
However, the lead did not last. In the first
minute of stoppage time, Morocco equalized through Issa Diop, who headed home a
perfectly delivered cross from Chemsdine Talbi to send the match into extra
time.
Neither side could find a winner during the
additional 30 minutes despite creating several chances, forcing the contest
into a penalty shootout.
Morocco showed greater composure from the
spot to claim a 3-2 shootout victory. The Netherlands paid the price for missing
multiple penalties, bringing their World Cup campaign to a heartbreaking end.
With the victory, Morocco advanced to the Round of 16, while the Netherlands were eliminated despite being only minutes away from securing qualification.
