South Africa have written a new chapter in their football history by securing a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time ever. A crucial 1-0 victory over South Korea ensured the African nation's progression to the Round of 16.
The final Group A match, played at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico, was filled with excitement from the opening whistle. Both teams adopted an attacking approach in their bid to qualify for the knockout rounds, but a single goal ultimately proved decisive.
South Korea created the better chances in the first half. They came close to scoring as early as the second minute from a corner kick, while a later effort from Lee Kang-in narrowly missed the target. South Africa also threatened on several counterattacks, putting pressure on the Korean defense. Thanks to solid goalkeeping at both ends, the first 45 minutes ended goalless.
The pace of the game increased after the break. In search of a breakthrough, South Korea introduced star forward Son Heung-min. Despite adding more attacking threat, the Asian side failed to find the back of the net.
The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute. South Africa launched a swift counterattack, and Tafelo Maseko received a pass from a substitute before producing an excellent finish to beat the South Korean goalkeeper. The goal gave South Africa a crucial lead.
After conceding, South Korea pushed hard for an equalizer. They spent much of the closing stages applying relentless pressure on the South African defense. However, the African side, marshaled by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, remained resilient. The Koreans also missed a clear opportunity in stoppage time and were left frustrated at the final whistle.
The victory earned South Africa four points from three matches, enough to finish as Group A runners-up and secure a place in the Round of 16. They will face co-hosts Canada in the knockout stage on June 28.
South Korea, meanwhile, finished with three points from three matches. Their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds now depend on results in other groups, as they seek qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.
In the group's other match, hosts Mexico defeated the Czech Republic 3-0. Mexico won all three of their group matches to finish as Group A champions with nine points. South Africa claimed second place with four points, South Korea finished third with three points, and the Czech Republic ended their World Cup campaign at the bottom of the group with just one point.
