The Kachua Upazila Administration in Bagerhat has set an example of financial transparency and efficient public project management by returning Tk 3,438,299 in unspent funds to the national treasury after completing two canal re-excavation and rehabilitation projects.
According to project officials, the initiative was undertaken to improve drainage, increase agricultural productivity, reduce waterlogging during the monsoon, and ensure irrigation facilities in the dry season. The work was carried out in Gopalpur and Maghia unions.
The project was allocated Tk 7,733,142, while the actual implementation cost stood at Tk 4,284,843. The remaining Tk 3,438,299 was officially returned to the government treasury through Kachua Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Ali Hasan.
The completed works include the re-excavation of a one-kilometre canal from Doritana to the Baleshwar River and another one-kilometre section of the Kathalia Canal from Kundu Bari to Swapan Majhi's house in Maghia Union.
Beyond canal restoration, the project also included the plantation of 800 tree saplings along both canal banks to promote environmental sustainability. Pipe culverts and wooden bridges were constructed at key points to maintain water flow and improve local connectivity.
Upazila Project Implementation Officer Sudeb Krishna said the project was carried out under the direct supervision of UNO Md. Ali Hasan, ensuring quality, cost control, and strict compliance with government guidelines. He noted that careful monitoring helped complete the work without unnecessary expenditure while maintaining construction standards.
Local farmers and residents believe the restored canals will improve irrigation, reduce seasonal waterlogging, and enhance agricultural production. They also described the return of the unused allocation to the state treasury as a commendable example of transparency and accountability in public administration.
