Following a heavy defeat to Zimbabwe in the ongoing tri-nation series, Bangladesh are set to face Afghanistan in a must-win encounter. The Tigers have no option but to secure victory to keep their hopes of reaching the final alive. However, winning alone may not be enough; Bangladesh must also improve their net run rate to strengthen their chances of qualification.

Bangladesh will take on Afghanistan in the final group-stage match of the tri-nation series in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday (October 21) at 5:30 pm Bangladesh time.

Bangladesh came under pressure after suffering a 99-run defeat to Zimbabwe in their opening match. Afghanistan, meanwhile, are in a confident position after thrashing Zimbabwe by 158 runs. As a result, Bangladesh face a difficult challenge in their bid to reach the final.

The Equation Bangladesh Must Solve to Reach the Final

Afghanistan sit at the top of the points table with one win and a net run rate of +3.160. Zimbabwe are second with one win and one defeat, along with a net run rate of -0.590. Bangladesh are in third place following their opening-match defeat, with a net run rate of -1.980.

A victory over Afghanistan would keep Bangladesh's hopes of reaching the final alive. However, to overtake Zimbabwe, the Tigers will need a convincing win and must also improve their net run rate sufficiently.

According to the report, Bangladesh must win by at least 41 runs if they bat first. If they bat second, they will need to chase down the target within a specified number of overs, depending on the target set.

Under the given calculations, Bangladesh must complete a chase within 40.2 overs if the target is 200 runs. For a target of 220, they must win within 40.5 overs; for 240, within 41.1 overs; and for 250, within 41.3 overs.

Similarly, they must reach a target of 260 within 41.4 overs, 270 within 41.5 overs, 280 within 42 overs, and 300 within 42.2 overs.

Head-to-Head Record Evenly Balanced

Bangladesh and Afghanistan have faced each other 22 times in One Day International (ODI) cricket, with both teams winning 11 matches each.

However, Afghanistan have dominated recent encounters, winning five of their last six matches against Bangladesh. Those victories came in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Bangladesh's Probable Playing XI

Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Saif Hassan, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy (captain), Mosaddek Hossain Saikat/Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam.

Afghanistan's Probable Playing XI

Rahmat Shah (captain), Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sediqullah Atal, Ibrahim Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Zia-ur-Rehman Sharifi, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Yamin Ahmadzai.

Overall, the match against Afghanistan represents a crucial survival battle for Bangladesh. Alongside strong performances with both bat and ball, the Tigers must also navigate the net run rate calculations if they are to keep their final hopes alive.
