Today, May 3, marks World Press Freedom Day.
Like many other countries around the world, Bangladesh is observing the day
through various programs and events. This year’s theme is: “Shaping a
Peaceful Future: Advancing Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and
Security.”
To mark the occasion, members of the
country’s journalism community are organizing different events demanding
professional rights, safety, and freedom of the press. Various government and
private initiatives have also been taken to observe the day.
Based on a recommendation by UNESCO, the
United Nations declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day in 1993. Since then,
the day has been observed globally every year.
Marking the occasion, the Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting has organized a rally and discussion program in
the capital. The rally, which began at 9:00 am from the Officers Club, is
scheduled to conclude at the Information Building Complex.
In addition, a discussion meeting is being
held at 9:30 am in the conference room of the Department of Films and
Publications at the Information Building Complex.
Zahir Uddin Swapan is attending the event as chief guest, while Yasir Khan Chowdhury is present as special guest.
