Five litigants were injured after chunks of plaster fell from the ceiling
of a corridor at the Bagerhat District and Sessions Judge Court building on
Monday afternoon. The incident occurred near the courtroom of the Kachua Court
while people were waiting for their cases.
The injured were identified as Habibullah Sheikh, his father Md. Siraj
Sheikh, Suman Das, Hridoy Hawlader, and Motaleb. All of them were taken to the
250-bed Bagerhat District Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses said a section of the corridor ceiling suddenly collapsed
without warning, sending plaster onto those standing below. The incident also
exposed steel reinforcement bars, raising concerns about the structural
condition of the aging court building.
According to injured victims Suman Das and Hridoy Hawlader, they were
waiting outside the courtroom when the ceiling plaster unexpectedly fell on
them. Both sustained head injuries, while the remaining victims suffered
injuries to different parts of their bodies.
Dr. Asim Kumar Samaddar, Superintendent of Bagerhat 250-bed District
Hospital, said all five victims were admitted for treatment. Two required
stitches for head wounds, while the others suffered injuries to their necks and
legs. He confirmed that none of the patients is currently in critical
condition.
Nazir of the District Judge Court, Amit Kumar, said the Public Works
Department (PWD) had been informed and would inspect the building before
deciding whether it remains safe for public use.
Public Prosecutor (PP) M. M. Mahabub Morshed Lalon said the three-storey
court building is quite old and has developed cracks in several places. He
urged the authorities to undertake immediate renovation work to prevent any
major accident in the future.
